My brother, a self-employed, framing contractor never carried insurance because he couldn't afford it. Two weeks before he died of a massive coronary he went to the doctor for the first time in years. He was told to follow up with blood tests and a more intensive physical. He never did. Why? Because the bill for the first visit was too much for him to comfortably pay. He was not going back and putting his family into a deeper financial hole. So, two weeks later I got the call telling me my brother was dead. Had he had a means of seeing a doctor regularly he might still be with us today.
